Chapter 95

The Thai Smile:

The other day I was sitting in a local bar near a lady who did not look happy.
It was as though she had forgotten to remember how Thai people smile.
I engaged her in conversation in the hopes of cheering her up.
The task was beyond me.
I asked her what she thought was important in life.
Unhesitatingly and unsmilingly she replied "money".
"Yes" I said "but what's really important in life?"
"Money" she said.
"But what about friendship, happiness and good company?"
She shook her head. "No" she said, "money".
I could not shake her view on this, nor elicit a smile.
This made me sad and later when I thought about it I realized that to be her friend would mean nothing since if money meant so much more than friendship then the friendship meant nothing and would end as soon as the financial situation dictated it.
Unless this lady's perspective of life changes radically then I fear that she will never be content.
Also, if she doesn't learn how to smile more engagingly then I fear that her earnings will be scant.
